Please note that the majority of work that you will complete during this year is aligned with the SAT Prep class. For this reason, please use the button above to link to the SAT Prep page. Any additional info that is outside of the SAT Prep material will be posted below.
Analyzing your PSAT scores to determine focus for SAT studying & practice
An expectation in AVID is that you are interacting with your content-area class notes on a regular basis. This is not meant to be seen as busy work, but a valuable lesson and practice in consistent review of material. Please view the following videos to help you understand the WHY behind this expectation!
Please read the article and note the key details to discuss in class tomorrow. What are your personal take-aways? Be sure you can answer the following questions: 1) How would you explain "retrieval" based on the author's use of it in the text? 2) Moving closer to college, what strategies make sense for you to practice this year in order to be successful in your personal studying?
The above rubric will be used to grade your interactions with notes of your content-area classes. Please remember that the strength of these continued reviews/repetitions is that you will be able to know what to ask questions about prior to the tests, have higher retention of material (thus resulting in less time when you actually "study" the material for the test), and gain a deeper understanding of the material, allowing you to better understand future concepts that are built upon the initial information.

Using the list provided in class, you will research 1 AVID-friendly college and create a college pennant. The purpose of this assignment is to expose all students in AVID to other schools that they may not have thought of as a possibility for undergraduate studies. You will find the required information sheet and the rubric for the project below.
The purpose of these folders are to house all information that you will need when filling out collage and scholarship applications next year. You have begun compiling potential essay prompts for your desired colleges and a couple of rough drafts of college application essays. This summer is the ideal time to continue writing your required essays. Follow the tips in the attached document. Revisions of these essays will occur during the first month of Senior AVID, along with a Senior English unit, and a College Essay Night at DHS to make sure you are ready to submit all applications by the end of October. Remember that many of these essays can also be used for scholarships later in the year!
